Connect Your Landscape to the Larger Ecosystem

Yards tended like they’re part of something larger, because they are

Sustainable landscaping, yard design, and land stewardship consulting for the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Our projects include native planting, water-wise habitat, and sustainable practices that are built to hold up over time to re-connect with nature for homeowners and organizations.

Keeper of the Grove is a collective of interdisciplinary sustainability experts working together and apart depending on the project, and if we can’t provide the exact level of service, we can refer you to someone who can.

Land care rooted in relationship, not just landscaping.

A yard is a small watershed. What's planted there, and how it's cared for, shapes water, soil, and the creatures that pass through. Keeper of the Grove brings a background in salmon and watershed planning and management to the scale of a home yard or organizational campus, with practical projects that also support the larger systems they sit inside. Remote planning and support for IPM (Integrated Pest Management) plans, how-to care guidance with permaculture in mind, and offering workshop and training sessions!

“Ask permission of the ones whose lives you seek. Abide by the answer. Never take the first. Never take the last. Harvest in a way that minimizes harm. Use everything that you take. Take only that which is given to you. Share it, as the Earth has shared with you. Be grateful. Reciprocate the gift. Sustain the ones who sustain you, and the Earth will last forever.” — Robin Wall Kimmerer

Native & sustainable yard design

Planting plans built around species that already belong in this climate: less water, less maintenance, more life.

Lawn conversion & habitat restoration

Turning turf into layered habitat (groundcover, shrub, and canopy) for birds, pollinators, and soil health. Converting turf and lawns to meadows and multi-use spaces.

Consulting for homeowners & organizations

Site assessments and phased project guidance for anyone stewarding a piece of land, large or small.

Watershed & climate-resilience consulting

Stormwater, runoff, and salmon-safe planning for properties near streams, wetlands, or shared water systems.

Place-based mapping & community engagement

Custom place-based and storytelling walks for organizations, clubs, retreats, and classrooms, plus volunteer events like work parties, trash pickups, and forest planting.

Services

Every project starts at the scale of the site in front of us (a yard, a campus, a stretch of shoreline) and works outward from there.

From small jobs to multi-phase projects, we meet you where you are and work with the land, not against it.

Design

Native & sustainable yard design

Planting plans built around species that already belong in this climate: less water, less maintenance, more life. Because these plants are adapted to the region's rainfall, soil, and seasons, the yard needs less intervention once it's established.

An example of temporal and spatial design: 2D and 3D modeling that maps what blooms where, and when, for year-round planning.

  • Initial consultation, site walk and/or plant inventory
  • Landscape map analysis and plant installation consultation
  • Guidance on planting
  • Native and drought-tolerant planting plan
  • Pollinator and bird-friendly plant selection
  • Companion planting
  • Food forest, edible garden, and garden bed design
  • Kid-friendly garden plans
  • Seasonal maintenance calendar
Habitat Restoration

Lawn conversion & habitat restoration

Turning turf into layered habitat (groundcover, shrub, and canopy) for birds, pollinators, and soil health, and converting lawns to meadows and multi-use spaces.

Stewarding your land with sustainable and regenerative methods that build healthy soil, welcome pollinators, and grow food alongside habitat. We replace turf with layered plantings (groundcover, shrub, and canopy), reduce or eliminate synthetic pesticides and herbicides, and help you create care practices that keep your yard thriving season after season. Our fleet is all-electric, and we use only electric tools to keep noise and air pollution to a minimum.

  • Turf removal and soil assessment
  • Layered habitat planting plan
  • Regenerative and permaculture methods on campuses and yards of any size
  • Phased conversion for budget or time constraints
  • Follow-up check-ins through the first growing season
  • Meadow and multi-use space conversion, with weed suppression
  • Methods of pesticide and herbicide reduction
  • Pollinator support and consideration planning
  • Integrated Pest Management Plan design and creation
  • Chip-drop help: we'll spread your wood chip delivery quickly so it doesn't sit on the driveway
Consulting

Consulting for homeowners & organizations

Site assessments and phased project guidance for anyone stewarding a piece of land, large or small. We walk the site with you, put recommendations in writing, and map out a budget-phased plan your team, landscaper, or volunteer crew can follow.

When your organization needs evidence to back a grant, we can help gather it. We design and carry out quantitative and qualitative data collection, from plant and pollinator surveys and site measurements to participant interviews, reflections, and story gathering, so your funding requests show both the numbers and the meaning behind your work.

  • Site assessment and written recommendations
  • Budget-phased project roadmaps
  • Coordination and training options with landscapers or volunteer crews
  • Grounds staff training on permaculture and regenerative methods
  • Quantitative and qualitative data collection to support grant applications
  • Grant and funding guidance for larger projects
Watershed

Watershed & climate-resilience consulting

Stormwater, runoff, and salmon-safe planning for properties near streams, wetlands, or shared water systems: planning that accounts for where the water goes, not just what's planted.

  • Stormwater and runoff assessment and referral
  • Native landscaping practices and certification pathways: Salmon Safe, Re:Wild your Campus, and Bee Campus USA / Bee City USA
  • Climate-adapted species and layout planning
  • Guidance connecting homeowners with RainWise services and rebates, including sizing and sourcing rainwater storage systems and referrals to qualified installers
  • Water quality monitoring referrals to help assess stream health
  • Coordination with local watershed groups
Community

Place-based mapping & community engagement

Getting to know a place means walking it. We trace and record routes around the region (forest tours, hikes, and observation walks) that help us read how water, plants, and people move through the land.

Some of the best learning happens outside, with soil on your hands and a story between neighbors. Our classes, guided walks, and storytelling tours invite people to notice what's growing and tell the story of a place across its past, present, and future.

For schools, nonprofits, teams, and community groups, we build custom walks, workshops, and volunteer events that advance your Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and make a tangible impact in our shared watershed.

  • Recorded forest tours, hikes, and observation walks
  • Educational classes, guided walks, and storytelling tours
  • Custom place-based walks for organizations, clubs, retreats, and classrooms
  • Customized workshops for schools, teams, and community groups
  • Workshops on composting, waste reduction, and regenerative grounds
  • Volunteer events: work parties, trash pickups, and forest planting
  • Support for your organization’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), team cohesion, and environmental literacy

About Keeper of the Grove

We operate in the spirit of a guild—a collective of independent specialists working both individually and together across our watershed. As an interdisciplinary group of land stewards, ecologists, arborists, and craftspeople, we pool our expertise to help you restore, transform, and care for the land you live, work, and study on.

Tamara Wood

Founder of Keeper of the Grove and board member of OneBothell, a land conservation nonprofit.

Hi, I’m Tamara Wood, a local land steward and the founder of Keeper of the Grove. With a bachelor’s degree in sustainability and a background in ecological restoration, I created Keeper of the Grove to help my neighbors add ecological value, save money, and build climate resilience right at home.

My approach is rooted in real, hands-on experience: years of rewilding my own property, groundskeeping at a local riparian restoration wetland, community organizing around salmon and watershed health in the Puget Sound region, and active stewardship throughout the North Creek watershed and beyond. Whether you need hands-on labor, invasive species removal, or a custom native planting plan, I’m here to help you care for your piece of our shared watershed.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sustainable Practices, with a focus in American Indian Studies and Ecological Restoration
  • Cascadia College Founders Environmental Stewardship Award, 2025–2026
  • Background in salmon and watershed organizing
  • Coordinator of an upcycling art collective
  • Experience in waste management education
  • Rooted in both the Pacific Northwest and Albuquerque, NM

Relationship first

Every project starts with listening: to the people who live with the land and to what the land is already doing. We incorporate practices of reciprocity with the land inspired by the wisdom of Robin Wall Kimmerer.

Long time horizons

Through our teachings and observations, we seek to understand the ebb and flow of seasonal change, including natural ecological succession. We can help you over time with natural changes, and/or help you develop tools to develop a ritual of care.

Community-scale thinking

A single yard connects to a neighborhood, a watershed, and the people downstream. We practice the tenet of “small is all,” a tenet of Emergent Strategy by adrienne maree brown.

Recognition & research

Our academic backgrounds feed directly into this work. Tamara’s capstone research, De la Tierra: Weaving Place-Based Education, Emergent Education, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge through Interpretive Research, grew out of co-directing Raíces de la Tierra and looked at how land-based and Indigenous ways of knowing can shape how we teach and learn about a place. It's the same question we bring to a yard: a piece of land is also a teacher, if the design gives it room to be one.

Place-based mapping

Getting to know a place means walking it. These maps trace routes walked and recorded by our team around the region: forest tours, hikes, and observation walks that help us read how water, plants, and people move through the land.

Corporate Stewardship & Community Engagement

Partner with Keeper of the Grove to advance your organization’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while making a tangible impact in our shared watershed. Through place-based mapping and storytelling guided walks, we help teams connect deeply with local ecosystems. We can create place-based walks for your organization, club, corporate retreat, or classroom that orient us and ground us in the places we reside. We can also help your organization curate custom events where your team can give back through work parties, trash pickups, and forest planting—fostering team cohesion, environmental literacy, and hands-on community resilience.
